Mental health

Hi after experiencing a severe mental health breakdown being in the same job for many years. And looking for a new change of career how do people cope from being in a safety net of a old job and completely closing that chapter on your life and starting afresh with new career unlike something  you done before. Probably is how do you put it into realisation? 50 and starting afresh.

Re: Mental health

hey @BlackRosemary50 welcome to the forums 😊

i don't have an answer to your question but i did want to pop in and say hi. there's community members here who have switched careers or decided to take up a new course later in their life so i'm sure they'll be able to share some thoughts with you soon.

i did have a thought tho, not sure if it's applicable for you - are you looking at completely leaving your current job or would you consider maybe transition into less hours (maybe part time) and then trying the new job/career as a part time role too? the other thought i had is, if things don't work out with the new career - would it be possible to jump back into your old one?

Re: Mental health

Hi thanks for the response Iv left my old job also recently found out have autism and add social anxiety to the mix of things. Not unlikely to go back to old job due to bullying in the workplace partly lead to the mental health break down.

Re: Mental health

hey @BlackRosemary50 it's nice to hear from you!

i'm so sorry to hear about the bullying in your previous workplace - absolutely not on! i'm glad you've left, you deserve to work in an environment that respects you. how are you feeling about finding work now? and how are you feeling about the autism diagnosis?

Re: Mental health

A lot on my mind. Finally after 50yrs I knew something wasn’t right so was carrying a lot of depression anxiety, regarding having autism has lifted a lot of history from mind. Tho with that and social anxiety dampen a lot getting back into the work force and a huge career change as well. I’m just taking things day by day at the moment still seeing my psychologist and being on here helps a lot

Re: Mental health

absolutely, sounds like there's been some weight lifted off your shoulders from getting those answers @BlackRosemary50 i'm so glad that you've got your psych supporting you - and ofc the forums are always here for you too 💙

it is a lot of process and think about it - taking it day by day sounds like a good plan. 😊
