Hi @Former-Member .... ๐ ... and anyone else following along ....
Here is what I have done today .....
I chose 3 acrylic paint colours, added white to them individually, and watered them down a bit so that the text would show through.
Then I painted stripes down the page in a repeated pattern, and dried it with a hair dryer. Then I painted more stripes across the page to create a tartan sort of design, and dried it off again with the hair dryer.
Then I painted PVA glue all over the (dry) surface to create a seal, and dried it off again. That way it has made a surface that you can work on without the materials soaking in and spreading. It has also created a bit of a rough, crackled effect, like bark in a tree.

Iโm doing a pic of an old man walking along the beach ๐ @Faith-and-Hop and me thinks I might remember this technique you have described. I. Got crackling medium but this sound more fun.....
